• At FES we plan to make use of ‘Eigo Note’ in class. Being able to pilot Eigo Note at the elementary school level should prove invaluable at the University level, particularly in classes related to Elementary school English Education
• I will also make further use of classes at the elementary school, showing video of actual classes for analysis and discussion in University level classes.

• ‘Eigo Note’ was used in class at Fuzoku elementary school.. This allowed the teachers of Fuzoku to gain experience with the text. I was also able to gain direct in-class experience with the text, which then helped to inform my University-level lectures.

 • Video footage of actual Fuzoku shogakko lessons was shown and analyzed in my University level classes (eg.

Kakenhi was received to do communicative testing at the elementary school level.

Interviews were conducted in January 2009. Results will be analyzed focusing on two main issues:

 1. Rater reliability and other issues involving raters and test practicality

 2. Student factors affecting performance on a communicative test, including affective factors, other English skills

Additional rating and testing will also be further conducted with the goal of improving reliability and validity.

The results of the interview testing were analyzed as specified above and the presented at the 全国英語教育学会 in Tottori in August of 2009.

Communicative interviews with Fuzoku elementary school students were conducted again in January, 2010. The interviews were conducted and rated by graduate students of this University under my guidance, with my research grant from the board of education.

2.分野別

A task based approach to develop communicative practical language skills

・ Conduct communicative testing, focusing on rater reliability and construct validity

・ Introduce debate and discussion using topics from Junior and Senior high school English text books to prepare for teaching practice

Teach teachers how to adopt a task based approach in class

・ Have teachers analyzing and critiquing tasks which have been done in elementary school

・ Have teachers designing their own tasks for elementary school students

Focus on practical language skills such as classroom English

・ Discuss case studies on international issues

(Graduate level)

・ Have teachers analyzing and critiquing tasks which have been done in elementary school

・ Have teachers designing their own tasks for elementary school students

In contrast to 初等英語科教育論 there will be a more practical focus to this class, including observation of actual English classes at Fuzoku elementary school.

 Additional goals include:

・ Conducting a voluntary English communication meeting once a week for graduate and undergraduate students.

・ Providing advice and assistance for students who would like to teach English at elementary schools.

・ Help with English E.S.S. club such as proofreading a guidebook for international students

・ Help with international students. An international student was accepted in the current academic year from Western Carolina University, with whom I have been working with and supporting at Fuzoku elementary school. I have also assisted with communication with Western Carolina University and facilitation of the exchange program. Our goal is to continue the exchange program through next year, circumstances permitting.

I have adopted a task-based and theme-based approach with these classes. Communicative interview tests have also been conducted and students have debated issues in English education arising at various levels in Japan.

This class has focused on practice (rather than theory). Students were introduced to many tasks for elementary school students and they were asked to analyze these tasks. Students then designed and presented their own task. This was a graded assignment.

This class focused on practical English skills. Various international issues were also discussed during class. Students were exposed to a variety of world views about many central world issues.

(Graduate level)

Teachers analyzed various elementary school activities and presented their own ideas, as outlined above. This class focused first on theory, then on practice. Students were introduced to many key concepts in English education such as ‘content based instruction’ and ‘task-based language teaching’. Then a connection was drawn between these concepts as students were shown activities from fuzoku elementary school (on video) or I presented activities directly to the students. Then students designed their own activities for elementary school considering the theory which had been discussed earlier.

In addition to these classes, I also conducted a voluntary English club, provided assistance to students involved in English education at elementary schools and helped with graduate students research and so on.

• I am currently assisting a Doctoral student with research on pronunciation and intelligibility which will continue through April of 2009.

• Communicative testing is currently being conducted in my Oral communication classes and that process will be further documented. Last academic year, results were presented. This research will continue through the next academic year and be submitted for consideration in academic journals

• Communicative interview tests were recently conducted at Fuzoku Shogakko and the results will be analyzed from a number of perspectives in the coming year. Some aspects which will be studied include:

 ◊ Inter-rater reliability

◊ Correlation between communicative ability and other academic or affective factors

 • Research on pronunciation specified above was published in the 全国英語教育学会寄与 in March, 2009.

 • Oral testing has continued in my English communication classes and student response has been very positive. (IE. Students feel that the test is a ‘real’ ‘communicative test’ unlike tests they have taken in the past)

 • Communicative testing research has continued at Fuzoku elementary school. Results of the 2009 test were presented at the 全国英語教育学会 in Tottori in August of 2009. Subsequent tests were conducted in January 2010 and the results will be presented in next academic year.
