Position Opening for Associate Professor or Lecturer

2. Job type and the number of positions: One full-time Associate Professor or Lecturer

3. Field of research: Sociology

4. Qualifications:

(1) Doctorate, or the equivalent research achievements in the field concerned.

NB: The successful candidate is expected to teach the Ph.D. program at the Joint Graduate School in the near future.

(2) Teacher’s license for primary school, for junior high school or for senior high school in Japan.

(3) One year or more of teaching experience as a full-time teacher at primary school, junior high school or senior high school

NB: In the event that the successful candidate who doesn’t have one-year-or-more teaching experience as a full-time school teacher, he or she will, in principle, be required to undergo training at the attached schools.

(4) The ability to collaborate with teachers at schools for educational research.

(5) Active participation in university operations and professional contributions to society

(6) Japanese ability necessary to perform duties at Naruto University of Education, no matter what the successful candidate’s nationality may be.

5. Courses to teach:

Graduate courses:

Seminar on School Subject Content for Teaching Social Studies Education(Civics), Seminar on Material Development for Teaching Social Studies Education(Civics), Classroom Instruction and Lesson Design for Teaching Social Studies Education(Civics),  Cross-Curricular Classroom Instruction and Lesson Design(Focusing on Language, Culture, and Society Practical), Seminar on Subject Teaching for School Support, Developmental Practice of Fundamental Ability as Teacher in School Education, Studies on Educational Practice(Civics), Fieldwork for Subject Teaching, and so on.

Undergraduate courses:

Introduction to Sociology, Special Lecture on Sociology, Seminar in Sociology,  Graduation Study, Basic Seminar in the Practice of Primary and Secondary Education,     Practical Seminar for the Teaching Profession, and so on.

6. Date of Employment: April 1, 2021

7. Length of Contract: The initial contract is for three years, with the possibility of tenure

                                         (The mandatory retirement age is 65.)

(3) Five principal publications (books and/or articles); originals, offprints, or photocopies.

(4) A summary of each of these in Japanese (approximately 200 characters) is required.

(5) Teaching and research plans at Naruto University of Education in Japanese (approximately 1,600 characters)

(6)Electronic files (MS-Word format) of (1), (2), (4).

12. Additional information:

(1)       Applicants will be informed of the results of the selection in mid-December 2020.

(2)       In principle, finalists will be invited for an interview with a teaching demonstration at Naruto University of Education. Finalists’ expenses for travel and accommodation for interviews will not be reimbursed.

(3)       The application materials will not be returned. If the applicant wishes to have them returned, he/she must request so beforehand.

(4)       The personal information the university has acquired in the selection process will be treated confidentially according to the Act on the Protection of Personal Information to be Held by Independent Administrative Institutions.

(5)       Naruto University of Education has a policy for recruitment in which the decision is not to be influenced by applicants’ nationality or gender. In cases where two or more finalists are equal in qualifications and achievements, the university will give preference to female applicants.

(6)       Even if the successful candidate is a local government employee prior to employment at the university, the university will not count his or her years of service as a local government employee in the calculation of his or her retirement allowance from the university.
