We report on visits abroad that occurred in 2010.
October 13-16, 2010
 Center for Safe Schools and Communities, Denver, USA  (Dr. Sara Salmon, Executive Director)





         
First we visited Colorado, a state with the highest mean elevation in the U.S. We were in its capital, Denver. It might be difficult to image from the beautiful scenery of the Rocky Mountains, but this city is striving to deal with problems of violence.
We visited the laboratory of Dr. Salmon who is active in prevention of school violence and attacks.

  On the 14th, we toured Ridgeview Academy where efforts to prevent school violence and attacks are being made by the entire school under the guidance of Dr. Salmon.
The school boasts their success as a reform facilit
y in guidance counseling and career guidance. It is a well-resourced boarding-style school with 300 high school students. When they graduate, they will get a job or go to college.
  In this visit, we had four people from our center, one person from Okayama University, and one person from the University of Hartford, U.S.A.




   
  On the 15th, we visited William Roberts Elementary School. They began a class with a relaxation method called “Melt.
The students gave us gifts. We reciprocated with folded paper cranes and hats that our staff made from their hearts, and the students decorated them in their classroom.
  We visited Charles Bradley Elementary School. The role playing class to practice social skills is popular among students. We took a picture with the students and teachers.   Dr. Salmon at the CSSC laboratory.


       
◆October.18-20.2010
 CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning),
 Chicago, USA (Dr. Roger P. Weissberg, President, and Member, CASEL Board of Directors) 




   
  On the 16th, we visited Chicago.   On the 18th, we visited Northwestern University located on the outskirts of Chicago. It is a beautiful university on the shore of Lake Michigan.   We visited Professor Bart Hirsch who specializes in after-school support for youths. We explained the projects at our center and exchanged ideas.
Dr. Hirsch showed great interest and we promised to have future collaborations.





   
  Dr. Hirsch gave Director Yamasaki of our center a copy of his book.   On the 19th, we visited CASEL which is the world leader of social emotional learning (SEL).   The staff of the University of Illinois at Chicago joined us and we explained our efforts. We were received enthusiastically with questions and exchange of ideas.
An enthusiastic discussion was held even over our lunch.





         
  Professor Roger Weissberg, the president of CASEL, gave a presentation.     We took a picture together.   We also took a picture with the staff at the CASEL headquarters.

  Padua Collage(primary classes), Mansfield State High School,
    the Department of Education and Training, the State of Queensland(Brisbane Australia)





     
  After we visited several schools, we listened to a talk by the staff at the Department of Education and Training, the State of Queensland. The staff is in charge of disseminating social emotional learning (SEL). Professor Bernard of University of Melbourne gave a presentation. His study involved 81 schools in Australia. The results were presented at conferences for the staff of the Department of Education, teaching staff of the state of QLD, and school principals of the state of QLD. Dr. Bernard emphasized the importance of SEL and the necessity to promote it. We listened to talks on preventive education by professors from 3 universities in Brisbane. We discussed future collaborations with them.
